hi cos,

columnar store indexes availabe @ sql server 2012, bring column-store indexes database engine, resulting in queries running several hundred times faster using regular indexes. there new microsoft technology called vertipaq, has different way of storing columns traditional indexes, , compresses data in index. see more informat @ columnstore indexes http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/gg492088(v=sql.110).aspx
to scalability, analysis services supply feature, there situations when analysis services database administrator (dba) wants improve query response time increasing number of end-users. there 2 ways accomplish goal: adding more power existing server (scale up), or distributing load among several small servers (scale out). more information about scalability, can refer to sql server best practices article @ whitepaper http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc966449.aspx
analysis services has long learn curve, have learn mdx, currently, new feature tabular mode which available @ sql server 2012, have relevant short learn curve, besides dax similar excel formula, more easy learn. more information tabular model, please see: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb522628(v=sql.110).aspx
