SQL Server 2008 R2 Data Collection and WMIPrvSE.exe
long time lurker/reader, first time poster... :)
i've been working on new environment prepare upgrade our 2000 environment 2008r2. in qa, did simulation of normal day's traffic against databases, decided wanted capture data , try use data collection tool set so. setup snap , , running, writing out 1 of our other databases.
in monitoring server whole, sql server instances seemed behave , had no problems keeping work load. qa people impressed responsiveness of reports applications. 1 thing myself , 1 of sa's noted there 2-3 wmiprvse.exe processes, cluster services , svchost.exe processes eating 25-30% of cpu. little suprirsed, failed on our second node in cluster , started testing again. time, data collection running, there no wmi/svc/clsvc processes hogging cpu.
both sa , myself sat there scratching our heads. we've got few more tests run , things dig into, wanted see if else has had similar issue? here's our current setup:
2-node cluster on vmware vsphere 4.1, windows server 2008 r2 enterprise sp1, sql server 2008 r2 cu5, running in active/passive mode
hi notsocleverdba,
windows management instrumentation (wmi) part of microsoft windows operating system provides management information , controls programs in enterprise environment. wmiprvse.exe host process wmi provider services. essential service start whenever specific piece of software requires facilities.
the collecting data remote can load wmiprvse.exe in-process. please refer link more information on troubleshooting: sql server (2005, 2008) performance counter collection problems.
you can check these 2 nodes same operate system see if installed different roles or features or other third party application may load wmi provider service.
