Unable to Install SQL Server Express (SP1 or SP2) on Vista

i unable install business contact manager outlook 2007.  i sought in bcm forum, developer spoke came conclusion sql server express problem experiencing, , recommended come here help.

i running on vista ultimate.

every attempt have made install bcm (and later sql express server 2005 separately, see below) has failed @ same point, same error message:

"sql server setup not connect database service server configuration. error was: [microsoft][sql native client][sql server]login failed user 'sa'.

today attempted install sql express server sp2 separately on own, idea being if worked, i might able install bcm on top of it.  attempted sql ee sp2 installation after uninstalling remnants of previous installations best of ablity. sp2 installation failed @ same point, , had same appearance, saw in all prior attempts.  (the installer reported no errors or warnings in system checks prior beginning actual install.)

other things have tried include disabling uac, , running bcm setup.exe 'as administrator'.

any advice on how sql ee installed, can install bcm, appreciated.

here today's finding.  created new partition on 1 of hard drives, , did clean install of vista there.  installed office 2007 small business.  installation completed no issues.  @ least sure there's no fundamental os or hardware incompatibilities; original vista system causing incompatibility. 

i not looking forward having reinstall apps , move data , settings able use bcm, spend little more time trying identify , remove source of problem on original system.

again, advice on how solve or work around sql server ee installation problem having appreciated.
