Can't restore SQL 2005 BAK to SQL 2008 R2 running on Server 2012

hi there,

preparing switch sql 2005/server 2003 sql 2008 r2 / server 2012.   took backup of sql database on 2005 (stored @ cloud backup provider nightly) , copied new machine.  unable restore .bak file, error:

the media family on device <backup path> incorrectly formed.  sql server cannot process media family.

restore headeronly terminating abnormally.  (microsoft sql server, error: 3241)

tried 2 different backup files 2 different nights, same error.  i understand error can show when restoring lower version of sql, that's not case here.

also, know can occur if bak file corrupt, , can't verify yet, 2 in row failed.  i'm hoping our cloud solution isn't part of problem somehow.

bak file 15 gb in size, don't have ability attempt restore on 2005 production server.   not enough room, , can't afford cause performance issues on box anyway.

anyone know of way better handle on what's going on, or, better, how resolve it?

thanks

robin
