SQL Server 2005 on VISTA fails to start

some appreciated. stuck 2 days now. ( got dim view of vista @ point...)

running windows vista business, sp1 on dell optiplex 740 (amd tripple core 2.3) 4gb ram.

trying install sql server 2005, developer x86 edition.

on start of install following warniing "this program has known compatibility issues". recommends online, did , found nothing useful. further says "after sql server setup completes, must apply sql server 2005 service pack 2 (sp2) or later service pack before run sql server 2005 on version of windows

so assumed install, , service pack , good.  except cannot through install.

  • it goes through prerequisties fine
  • system config check - no problems
  • under components install select sql server database services (i've tried selecting everything...and db engine - same results)
  • i've tried default , named instances
  • i've tried domain accounts ( in local admin group), local system account, network service account....all same outcome
  • i've set not start services on completion. thinking need first sp2...no help....
  • i've tried windows , mixed mode authentication...

the install runs, , @ end tries start service ( though said not to...).. service fails start , install rolls back. fail error following...

"the sql server service failed start. more information, see sql server books online topics, "how to: view sql server 2005 setup log files" , "starting sql server manually"

another window opens says
